About a year into the war of 1812, Captain James Lawrence and the US frigate Chesapeake were engaged in battle against a British frigate. Mortally wounded in his cabin, as his crew locked into hand-to-hand combat he uttered the phrase "Don't give up the ship!" Which became one of America's most memorable wartime slogans in the U.S. Navy.
