If there’s a phrase I’d use for the Huawei MateBook D 15, it’d be good enough. The display is good enough, the system’s performance is good enough to handle most workloads, there are a decent amount of ports, audio quality from the speakers is good enough, the webcam and mic are good enough for Skype calls. The battery life is also good enough for a 15.6-inch laptop.

Performance & Benchmarks

The Huawei MateBook D 15 is equipped with a Ryzen 5 3500U processor paired with Vega 8 graphics, and up to 8GB of RAM. For storage, it has a 256GB PCIe SSD, and a 1TB HDD. By default, the system has allocated 1.1GB for the Vega 8 integrated graphics, leaving the user with only 6.9GB of usable RAM. For our benchmarks, we ran Cinebench R15 & R20, the Unigine Suite, 3D Mark’s FireStrike & Night Raid, and CrystalDiskMark. All tests were done with the laptop plugged in the socket, in a 28° C room with no airconditioning. The Huawei MateBook D was also in its vanilla state, with no OS optimizations done to improve results.

First, we have the CPU benchmark Cinebench. In both R20 and R15, the Ryzen 5 3500U can trade blows with Intel’s i5-8550U with the Intel beating Ryzen on the single-core results, and the Ryzen beating Intel on multi-core results.

Huawei has launched the MateBook D 15 Ryzen version, which is using AMD dual channel memory design which the company claims can improve the graphics performance by more than 30 percent. It comes with AMD R5 3500U chipset with up to 16GB of RAM.

The device has 16.9mm thickness and comes in a 1.9Kg aluminum alloy body which makes it light, thin and portable. The company also added that the MateBook D 15 comes equipped with a lightweight 65W USB-C power adapter which is weighing about 160 grams.

Along with this, the company has also announced a compact version of this laptop, dubbed as Huawei MateBook D 14. As the name suggests, it comes with a 14-inch Full HD display and most of the specifications remains same as the 15.6-inch model.

The 14-inch model of the MateBook D measures just 15.9mm in thickness, same as the Apple MacBook Air and weighs at 1.38kg and supports 180-degree screen opening and closing. Both the models come with one-touch power button which comes with an integrated fingerprint recognition.
