The hoagie was invented in 1953 Philadelphia at a shipyard known as Hog Island. Italians working at the shipyard decorated their sandwiches with various meats, cheeses, and lettuce between two slices of bread. They called it the Hog Island sandwich, which later came to be the hoagie.
